   The Future for Birley Fields?

Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) has released plans to build a new £70m campus on Birley Fields in Hulme.

The new campus aims to be the greenest in Britain and could include a skills and job centre, new library, an urban village hall and health and business centres.

It is envisaged that the new campus will provide training for teachers, nurses, social workers and other health care professionals on to a single site, to replace MMU campuses in Rusholme and Didsbury.

Welcoming the proposed investment in Hulme, local councillor Nigel Murphy said “This is a very exciting proposal and is the latest chapter in Hulme’s regeneration. The planned £70 million investment is a massive statement of confidence in Hulme, especially in a period of economic recession. MMU have worked very closely with us while the plans have been drawn up and are currently consulting with local residents, businesses and community groups about the scheme, further details can be found at www.HulmeLabour.org.uk/mmu.html ”
