LABOUR’S 2008 POLICIES FOR
MANCHESTER
Manchester Labour has a vision of
Manchester as a City of national and international significance;
where people come to live and work and where companies
invest. Over the past years we have used this vision to lead
the City and we have achieved significant successes. We
believe that everybody in the City must share in the successes and
the wealth created. Manchester Labour wants everyone to have
equal access to employment, opportunity and prosperity.
Significant hurdles still remain if we are to achieve this as many
communities in the City suffer from significant levels of poverty,
ill health and discrimination. However, we will achieve our
goals and this will mean that people are wealthier; live longer,
healthier and happier lives; and are part of diverse, stable
communities.
Manchester Labour has led the City to
greater levels of success and prosperity over the years and we will
ensure that everybody shares this achievement
Manchester Labour wants more of the people
in our City to connect to Manchester's success and achieve their
full potential through education and employment. We will help
and support individuals and communities to achieve their full
potential, to raise their ambitions, to have respect for themselves
and respect for their communities. We will continue to lead
the building of truly sustainable communities where people choose
to live because of the quality of life.
We will ensure that Council services are easily accessible
through the web, by telephone or in person. We will continue
to change the way the Council works and maximise the use of
technology.
Manchester Labour is committed to working
with local communities across the City to make every neighbourhood
a great place to live. Labour Councillors are stewards for
their local communities; representing the interests of local people
in the Council and making sure that each neighbourhood gets a fair
deal. They are accountable to local communities as well as
the local Labour Party.
Labour Councillors have ensured that the Labour Council has
invested more money in local communities. For example, the
CAS:H Grants Scheme has spent nearly £3 million on schemes that
contribute locally to the quality of life. It has proved so
popular that £40,000 per ward will be spent this year.
We will be introducing new schemes to complement CAS:H grants to
increase substantially the amount of council funds invested in
priorities established at local and neighbourhood level.
