Manchester City Council’s pioneering approach to tackling crime and anti social behaviour is a huge success.
Manchester’s Labour Council joined forces with Greater Manchester Police, residents and other partners to organise a series of Respect Action Weeks throughout the city. During the weeks the
council, police and the community worked together to reduce crime, tackle anti social behaviour and to support local residents working to improve their environment.
The scheme began with a pilot in June focusing on Harphurhey, Moston, Miles Platting, Newton Heath and Clayton. It proved so successful that it was extended to twelve more wards across the city.
Cllr Jim Battle said: “The Respect Action Weeks were organised against a back drop of investment and ground work by local police and the community safety teams. We have imposed dispersal orders and
alcohol bans and provided access to support networks and diversionary activities. Community relations are strong and the Respect Action Weeks have helped to leave a lasting legacy .
Manchester Labour is committed to stand along side of residents in the fight against crime in contrast to the Lib Dems who are soft on crime.
The Respect Agenda in Manchester is a balanced framework of powers and approaches to come down hard on those committing anti-social behaviour, positively promotes respect, tackle the causes of anti
social behaviour and continue to provide support to people who are affected by it.
Labour Minister for Children Young People and Families, Bev Hughes, pressed the button that started up a crushing machine to mark the launch of the Respect Action Week programme at Harpurhey. Bev
Hughes said Manchester is leading the way Labour councillors are working with residents to fight crime and anti social behaviour. Manchester Labour does make the difference”.
