Alexandra Park in Whalley Range has become the new home of the beautiful 8m Norway
spruce Picea abies tree that graced Albert Square as part of the city centre's traditional Christmas decorations.
Local Whalley Range campaigner Amina
Lone , said: "The living tree is just part of Manchester's efforts to be greener and I'm glad to see it going into one
of our great local parks
In its quest to become the greenest city in the country, Manchester has - for the last two years - displayed a living Christmas tree in Albert Square, and
Manchester's Parks Arbor Team now make an annual prize of the tree after Christmas: last year's tree was replanted in Clayton Park, and Alexandra Park was chosen this year as a result of the hard
work by the park's dedicated wardens team, and local group the Friends of Alexandra Park.
Apart from being decorated with hundreds of beautiful LED lights, the living Christmas tree spent Christmas in its natural state, with a giant, growing root
ball. Moving it from Albert Square to Alexandra Park, where the ground has been prepared for its replanting, will ensure it continues to grow to its
expected mature height of 25 metres.
In the picture you can see Amina Lone with Cllrs Mary Watson and Afzal Khan watching the tree being installed in the park.
