Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) has released plans to build a new £70m campus on Birley Fields in Hulme. The new campus aims to be the greenest in Britain and could include a skills and job centre, new library, an urban village hall and health and business centres. - Plastic recycling scheme hits the north
Residents across north and east Manchester will be able to recycle plastic and cardboard at home as part of Manchester City Council’s plan to turn the city into the UK’s recycling capital. More than 40,000 new households will be able to place used plastic bottles and cardboard items into their existing recycling bins from July 6, as part of a series of improvements which will see all Manchester residents receiving a better recycling service by the end of the year. - Park apprentices grow their skills
A pair of budding gardeners are learning new horticultural skills by working as apprentices in Manchester City Council’s parks. Holly Granville, aged 19, is working in Gorton’s Debdale Park, while Michael Garnett, aged 20, is based in Heaton Park. The pair, who started work earlier this month, will spend the next three years developing horticultural skills such as planting and pruning flowers and shrubs, as well as learning mechanical skills such as driving specialist vehicles.
